‘It is health that is real wealth, and not pieces of gold and silver.’ A famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi. Good health is what every human being desires. We all strive to eat right, exercise and get into a healthy living routine. Good health is key to survive in this world. It is in health that we are able to function and operate our day to day activities. Without good health, a human body fails to function fully. When the body can’t maintain its maximum operating capacity, it results to dependency. Dependency, as a result, puts a strain in whatever little resources we have, be it in machines, medicine or even caregivers.
Unfortunately, the lack of good health is not just caused by bad lifestyles or bad eating habits. Medical conditions, temporal and chronic can result in various ways. One can develop a medical condition from a just simple change in the environment, a reaction to a certain substance, genetic disorder, heredity or even accidents. Whichever reasons we may find ourselves sick, or ill, we work towards regaining good health through seeking medical advice. Sadly, it’s through this unpredictability of un-wellness that most people really don’t see the reason for saving against medical conditions. There are even myths that the more you save towards a medical fallout, the more likely you are to fall ill.
Seeking medical advice has never been a cheap affair. It is required or rather advised, that we should be visiting the hospital at least annually to keep up with our health status. This bit is generally ignored because good hospitals that give proper medical reviews have really high consultation fees. The other standard hospitals with affordable standard rates are just overfilled with a lot of pressing medical cases that they ignore the preventive cases. Such reasons encourage the expensive wait behaviour. This is where a person just waits until a condition worsens before they actually seek medical advice. What we don’t realize is that the more we wait, the likelihood of the said condition becoming worse. Then, it becomes more expensive to treat it.
A good percentage of poverty cases we have in Kenya has directly resulted from wait behaviour. High medical fees take a big toll on family’s income, savings and investments thus leaving the family at a critical financial stage. Lack of medical cover most times contributes to inequality of access to proper health care. This is because most hospitals nowadays demand huge deposits before they offer medical services. If a patient fails to raise the finances, or rather in cases of emergencies, they are denied medical service that could have saved their lives.
As good health is a fundamental issue and a human right, the aim of the Kenyan government is offering proper health care to all citizens. Part of the big four pillars of the government is providing universal health coverage to all citizens of Kenya. The universal health cover goes a long way to cushion citizens against out of pocket expenditure of medical expenses. This reduces expenditure burden when seeking health care. The major drive of the Universal Healthcare is to provide access to medical care without financial hindrance. This aim is simply a key contributor to any country’s economy. A healthy nation definitely results to healthy workforce thus a strong economic value.
Faithful to its word, the government implemented proper health cover to the Teachers employed by the Teachers Service Commission. Teaching job is not an easy one yet very crucial. It is in the educational foundation of a person that most times define his future and path his life takes. A well-taken care of teacher is able to properly take good care of the future generation. A proper medical cover to the teachers from Minet is a blessing to all the teachers under Teachers Service Commission. This is because the medical cover that these teachers get not only caters to the teacher’s medical needs but also their family’s medical needs.
Now not only do the teachers deliver their services healthy but also at peace. The can rest easy knowing that their beneficiaries are well taken care of.
