The Kisii Half Marathon took place yesterday. It was such an exciting event as we had many athletes taking place. The defending champions, Joseph Koech and Philes Ongori took part in this marathon too.
Overall, it was a great event and we were waiting to witness the two champions defend their titles as they were the reigning champions of the last marathon.
We encountered new champions this time around- Nicodemus Kipkerui and Joan Chelimo. Nicodemus crossed the finish line first in a time of 62:39:1, while Joan crossed the finish line at a time of 72:5:5.
It was a race that was had very close competition, with Nobert Kigen following Kipkerui closely at 62:56:1, while Emmanuel Bor came in third at 62:12:8. The defending champion Joseph Koech came in at 18th position.
In the women’s category, Joy Kamuma came in second with a time of 72:35:2 and she was followed closely by Lydia Njeri who locked in at 73:50:6. Defending champion Philes Ongori came in at position 19.
Both winners in the men’s and women’s category contributed their success to favourable weather and terrain in Kisii, which is hilly, seeing that thy also train in hilly environments.
As previously said ,the winers would walk away with KES100,000 while first runners up would pocket KES50,000 and third placers would get KES30,000.
Under the Safaricom Athletics Series, Safaricon sponsored the marathon with KES 1million. Safaricom is proudly associated with the athletes, hoping to also discover more talent.
Under this same marathons, athletes like Wesley Ochori, Ruth Bosibori, Grace Momanyi and Edwin Mokua among others have been produced.
Congratulations to the winners of the marathon. Here is to more marathons and discovering new talent.
