Safaricom has a caring and loving spirit as they love to take care of the community around them. They love to nurture young talent everywhere they go. The 8th edition of the Safaricom Iten Marathon is set for 25th August. Safaricom Iten Road race will take place at Elgeyo Marakwet.
Safaricom Iten road race is a continuation of the Safaricom Marathon Series. The Safaricom Iten Road race has come after the Safaricom Deaf Half Marathon that took place in Mombasa. The other series that has taken place is Safaricom Kisii Half Marathon.
Safaricom is sponsoring the race to a tune of KES 1 million. The winners of the race will walk away with KES 50,000 while the first and second runners up will pocket KES 40,000 and KES 30,000 respectively. This will be for both the men and women’s races.
There will be notable athletes in the marathon, who have confirmed attendance. These are:- Jorum Lumbasi, who is the defending champion of both Iten Road Race and Family Bank Half Marathon, Joan Chelimo, who is this year’s winner of the Kisii Half Marathon and Berlin Half Marathon. In attendance will be Edith Chelimo , who is also the defending champion in the women’s category.
The ten kilometers road race will be flagged off at Bugar, which is located between the Eldoret Kapsowar road. It will take place as from 8.30am on Saturday 25th August. The finish point will be at Iten Grounds.
The Iten Road Race aims to nurture young talented athletes and to support sports at the grass-root level. The major aim of Safaricom Marathon Series is to reach out to the talents that may have taken while to be recognized or completely passed off.
The next Safaricom Athletics Series will head to Mombasa for the Mombasa International Marathon, after which the series will hold the Isaiah Kiplagat Memorial Ndalat Gaa Cross Country and Madoka Marathons, which will be held in October.
